Chen Xiaoxu was born in Anshan, Liaoning in 1965. She became famous for her role as Lin Daiyu in Dream of the Red Chamber, a CCTV series in 1987.

However, Chen did not stay in the entertainment industry for long. She decided to begin a career in advertising. At the time, she was the General Manager for Shi Bang Advertisement Co. Ltd. and Shi Bang Culture Development Co. Ltd.[citation needed]

In 2007, less than two months before her death, Chen became a Buddhist nun, ordained by Venerable Master Chin Kung, and was given the Dharma name Miaozhen.

Chen died of breast cancer in Shenzhen on May 13, 2007.

During the 1980's, the television adaptation of the Chinese classic novel Dream of the Red Mansion was a hit throughout China. With another production of this classic tale in the works, there is a new wave of interest in the actors and actresses from the earlier version.

In the original series the main character of Lin Daiyu, the well-educated and intelligent young woman, was portrayed in a highly sympathetic light by the actress Chen Xiaoxu. Many people once thought Chen Xiaoxu, herself, was a dream girl.

A Real Life Dream Girl

It has been 20 years since Dream of the Red Mansion was first broadcast in China. After playing the role of Lin Daiyu, Ms. Chen, she did not stay in the entertainment industry for long. She decided to begin a career in advertising instead. Now, she is the General Manager for Shi Bang Advertisement Co. Ltd. and Shi Bang Culture Development Co. Ltd.

Inside her modest office there are two eye-catching objects. One is a photo of her as Lin Daiyun; the other, inside the niche facing her desk, is a picture of an old Buddhist monk

"He is my mentor, Master Chin Kung," Chen explains.

While talking about her past during an interview, she says, "I haven't experienced much difficulty or frustration. What I went through was self-retrospection, self-negation and a new beginning."

After decades of being in the business world, she still retains her unique personality and principles— honesty, assertiveness and a little conservativeness.

An Actress for Two Series

She acted in a total of two series during her brief acting career: Dream of Red Mansion and a TV series adapted from a famous Chinese novel, Family, Spring, Autumn.

But it was Dream of Red Mansion that brought her success and put her at the pinnacle of her acting career. Chen said that at the time, her personality was similar to Lin Daiyu's: physically fragile, keen on reading and absorbed in art. Once she heard that Dream of Red Mansion was to be cast, she arranged an audition with the director. Despite the director's initial uncertainty, she firmly and boldly persuaded him, saying, "I am indeed Lin Daiyu. If I don't play this character, the audience won't like the series."

Later, the Dream of Red Mansion became one of the most popular TV series in China's history. This helped her to be cast for her second series. However, no matter how hard she tried in acting, she could not change her former image and she was typecast as Lin Daiyu.

She clearly understood the challenges before her. She admits that her success in Dream of Red Mansion was mostly because of the similarity between her and the protagonist rather than her acting skills or experience. Even so, she feels lucky that she was able to act in such an outstanding role the very first time, and she was quite satisfied.

Thus, she retired from acting and began struggling with her own personal development. She tried different things and encountered numerous obstacles during the following years. It wasn't until 1991 that she finally fell into the business world by chance.

A Lucky Advertising Woman

According to Ms Chen’s, her entry into advertising was completely by chance. In the beginning, she just wanted to make money and be a successful businesswoman. The money to start her career came from stock investment profits.

She followed a friend's suggestion that she set up an advertisement company in Beijing. She still remembers that the small company's first client was a pharmaceutical factory. Her fame did help her a little in business, but the main factor in her success was that the market was favorable in the late 1980's. "It was the ad industry boom. If I had started any later, the result might have been quite different."

She experienced ups and downs managing the company over the past two decades. For example, in 1994, when the economy was not doing so well, she lost a lot of clients. After that, she realized that a successful business should be based on both market exploration and client maintenance. Nine years later, her company grew into a brand enterprise that included advertisement, culture and business services. The company has now become a leader in the advertisement industry with annual sales of 200 million RMB.

The marketing campaign of Wu Liang Chun, one of the most famous Chinese liquor, was designed by Ms. Chen. The ads were a big success and in 2005 the brand value of that wine reached 3 billion Yuan, topping the domestic liquor market.

A Simple and Peaceful Life

For a period of time after she quit the film industry, she focused on making money and tried to make her parents happy by buying them presents and providing them with a comfortable life. "But later, I found that material pleasure did not bring my family real happiness. I became increasingly busy and more agitated, and my parents gradually weakened with age."

By pure chance, she heard a speech by Master Chin Kung one day, and she felt a resonance inside her body. The purity and peace conveyed through the Master's words caused her to reflect on her own life. She went to meet the Master and asked to become his student. She later took “Refuge” and became a Buddhist.

"Nowadays, success or failure doesn't mean that much to me. In my eyes, wisdom and spirituality are more important. I hope that my life can be like running water and that I can acquire the real meaning of life before I die."

In February 2007, a few days after the Chinese Lunar New Year, it was disclosed that she had finally become a nun at a Buddhist temple in Changchun, capital of Jilin province in northeast China. According to staff from her company, she would no longer take part in business from now on as she concentrates on Buddhist studies at the monastery...

Personal life

Before the shooting of "Dream of Red Mansions" was completed, she married her boyfriend who she had been in contact with for many several years and was her colleague in Anshan Modern Drama truope, receiving a marriage certificate. But marriage can't save her first love, and constant life friction and the wander of the remote place finally broke the once beautiful fairy. The student of Beijing Film Academy, Hao Tong, appeared in her world later on. He is handsome and tall, made the acquaintance with Chen due to the graduate work, then followed "his sister" until entering the wedding. However they both chose to flee to Buddhism at last.
